Another thing to consider is that 24 MP will be less 'forgiving' with mistakes than 16...

Well, if you need the focal length and speed while it's on sale is a good time to buy. It wouldn't make much sense to buy it after the sale ends. One thing I've learned though is that one seller's "Sale Price" is another's regular price... shop around.

*edit* I just took a quick pass through Amazon and Ebay and found the smc da 50mm f1.8 for anywhere from under $120 to over $245

I'm pretty fine with all those crazy deals for a K3. If you have a relatively new camera (say K5 and above), K3 is not so great deal considering:
a) it's a good lens you didn't buy (say, second hand FA77)
b) it might require a new PC
c) or significant upgrade to existing one (memory/CPU)
d) and significant increase in storage space required
e) or at least significant performance loss in Lightroom
f) finally if you don't shoot much action (so AF is not so important) the IQ increase over 16mp sensor might not really matter to you

So, I tried. Now you can go and buy it.

I just got a K3 for Christmas upgrading from a K5 original. I can say based on a week of playing with the camera to jump all over over it. Yes there might be features that you don't use and 24mp might be more than your intended purpose...but one of the first things I've noticed was that I need to rediscover all my LENSES. It has literally made ALL my lenses hum. It's made them all have new life in a big way. As a result of the faster, sharper, and more crisp/accurate autofocus.... is that the keeper rate goes UP by a lot.

Just the notion that the keeper rate (images that are in focus where they were intended to be in focus at) and other various factors like that make it worth it. If you go take shots for an hour at some event or place and with the old way you get a 35% 'keeper rate'.... if you can up that to say 75%.... that alone makes it worth it. I am not a big tech guru type but on a productivity level it's by far the best investment I've made in a long time based sheerly on that alone.

Of course this isn't some long term study...it's only been a week... but I can already see the writing on the wall.
