First few hours with K-3

Hi!

I got home 6 hours ago with used K-3 with 18-135. So far I have done four things.
1) Put battery to charger
2) Take picture of my Pentaxes
3) Take a cat picture
4) Upgrade firmware

I have downloaded manual and been skimming it through and now I'm going to make fool of my self asking stupid questions (which are answered in manual of course.)

Is my camera broken as I can't hear the shutter if there is other noise in the room? It takes nice pictures even I can't hear it.
Which one should I use DNG or PEF? I post process my pictures with Darktable mostly. Sorry no Windows for me.
Why my 8G memory cards feel so small when shooting raw?
In here there has been some discussion about focus peaking. Does K-3 have it in live view? I have some manual lenses I'd like to use.
Is there some database to enter serial number and get information about the camera? More than build date? 2013.10.21 and shutter count of my cat picture is number 161

Oh and her is the family portait. Taken with HTC HD2 Windows mobile Android phone.

No it is not broken.
You should use DNG normally but with Darktable you will have to test and see which works best.
8gb is fine just slow down and remember you have 2 cards.
Yes it has focus peaking.
No database that I know of.

Nope. Not broken. The K3 has a pretty quiet shutter.

The K-3 shutter sound can be adjusted in the camera menus. I have mine set in the middle and it is not noisy. If you have captured images, which you have, do not fear. You can make the shutter noisier if required.

I have no advice about raw settings. Others on this Forum have plenty.

Your 8G card is big enough but probably is too slow for good performance. It works, as your photo shows. You might want to upgrade memory cards to UHS10, high(> than 90/sec). Sixteen G cards will store hundreds of shots. Use 32 G for Raw+JPEG.
The K-3 has focus peaking. The manual will explain.
The Pentax Forums has a Serial number database where you can input your information.

On the raw vs JPG issue: remember raw is 14 bit depth, and there's lot more information in the file, JPG is of course compressed so raw always generates larger file. Happy Shooting (and I use DNG - it works with more open source software and I think is more of a standard).

Darktable doesnt recognize PEF. I use DNG on Darktable, and am happy.

Agreed. DNG works well with Darktable.

Get yourself a Sandisk Extreme Pro card. It keeps up with the K3. A 16 or 32 gb is fine, I often have 400 shot days so I like the bigger one.

And yes, focus peaking is available in Live View. In the Menus, Camera 3 - Live View and you can turn it on.

That really should be in the official user manual.

Great comments here, I love mine, have fun! Great camera. The cards are really inexpensive now, too. Get a couple of 32's. I hope you like the viewfinder, too. It is a good one.

I have no clue where you got the idea that you can adjust the shutter sound itself. You can adjust the AF confirm beep, but the shutter sound is purely mechanical.

Nope, it is that quiet, though I hear it (and my K5 too) when I do it. I was amazed coming from a Kx originally.
DNG, and send those to one card, JPG to the other.
I keep a pair of 64gb cards in mine. I like room and I take loads of pictures. Make sure those cards are fast too. I'm happy with my Patriot EP Pro that supposedly do 80 mb/s
You have to enable focus peaking in live view, but yes, it has it.
Nope

I think you meant focus confirmation beep sound (not shutter sound), which can be silent or adjusted via the menu system.

On the Q7, you can adjust the loudness of the shutter sound simulation.

The darktable devs recommend using dng if the camera provides it. The K-3 files rock in dt.

And forgot to add the darktable does indeed recognize PEF files. Just possibly not from the K-3 yet. - Jack
