What HAVE I done?

Hi

I got my K3 not ten days ago and out of the box everything was sweetness and light. Now? Now I'm not so sure.

I think where I went wrong was blindly following the setup guide in the Pentaxforum Review, so the first thing I must do is reset the camera to Factory Defaults and start again. I may re-install the firmware too. (v1.11 by the way).

The issue? I'm not sure. Both colour and exposure seem well out - blowing out the pictures. Let's start with a couple of examples (straight out of the camera, no post processing apart from re-sizing for the Web. I'll post links to the RAW versions if anyone's interested).

All were shot in Av mode, all were shot with only the lighting in the room (daylight LED downlights). The first three are set to AWB, the last two to 'Fluorescent - Daylight'. All were shot within moments of each other from the same position. How wildly different is the colour on these?

I'm kinda at a loss what to do next! Hope you can help.

Cheers

I guess you have turned "cross processing" on.
Check the manual and turn it off, if it is on, and try again.
K3 is great camera. enjoy!

You don't need to reinstall the firmware, a factory reset doesn't affect the firmware version.

To me it looks as if you have engaged the cross processing image mode. It will generate different results for each shot.

A very likely cause. It is very easy to inadvertently change the JPEG rendering setting on the K-3. I noticed this soon after my purchase and is one of my pet peeves. Ricoh should have required a confirmation step for this and certain other 4-way switch features.

Can anyone tell me why cross processing even part of the JPEG preset menu?

Can anyone tell me why JPEG presets are exposed as a top-level option?

I love cross processing JPEG setting! But I love editing RAW even more, so I never use it on my K-30. I wish it was an option on the MX-1, though!

I agree that OP's photos look "cross processed". What was the lens?

speaking of which: it would be great if we could build our own menus and even better would be to "hide" features that we never use. Wouldn't be all that hard to do either.

Thanks both - Cross-processing turned on - and to RANDOM. How? Why? Ah well. Now OFF!

Agreed, but not if you know what the colour is and you understand what the physics is behind them....

Cool Right. Best I go play again.

Thanks everyone

Because the home market demands it?

What a marvelous idea. Plug your Pentax with USB to computer, open PMS (Pentax Menu Software ) and just click and drag to make menus perfect for You. And also there should be big red button what resets everything back to factory settings.
