K-3 body scratched/discolored

Ok so a few days ago I noticed what just appeared to be some kind of dirt on the left side of the rear LCD... I tought it could be a bit of glue residue from the screen protector or something else, so I tried using a cloth to cleaning it up.

Unfortunately I realized it was actually a scratch/discoloration (sp?) on the edge of the screen... see the pictures.

I really do not know how it happened... anyway, is there anything I can do? I mean is it just a cosmetic issue or the damage can get worse with oxidation? Does magnesium alloy oxidize?

Wouldn't worry about it, after years of regular use the paint will wear off and give it that 'professional-patina'

That is the downside of upgrading, you always have to start getting that over and over again, that's hard work but at least my K-3 is already shwoing some metal

Yeah but you know what... the plastic shell of my K10D doesn't show many signs of use (rubber grips aside) and scratches are a lot less visible... maybe the only donwside of using full metal alloy bodies...

You can also get a small can of flat or matte black rust oleum metal paint from Home Depot or any hardware store. Touch the spots with a small brush or a Q Tip swab and the scratches will either be eliminated or covered up that they don't show anymore. This worked well for small paint nicks on Limited lenses as well. Just be sure not to use a gloss finish paint it will make the scratches show up even more.

Just use a black sharpie for small scratches.it might look a little glossy at first but just rub it from the oils of your skin and it will dull it down enough to be unnoticeable.

That just looks like some chipped paint on the body. The exposed metal shouldn't rust. If the look annoys you, use a black permanent marker or black nail polish applied sparingly to touch up the spots. Be careful to not get it on the LCD screen.

When I used to cover events as a videographer we knew who was new by glancing their cameras, tripods and other gear. The battle scars were badges of honor. If we needed something or had a question, wanted the inside gossip we knew the guys with the marks and scratches would most likely to know what's going down.

Once when I was shooting a series of training videos for a company in a big refinery and all the refinery personnel would tell me things and ignore the producer who was " in charge" . The producer finally got a little peeved and asked why they kept addressing me since I was just "the camera guy". The escort told him it was because of my steel toes. Mine were a decade old and nicked, stained and scratched, his were brand spanking new. They knew he'd never been in a plant or refinery. Mine were so worn they surmised I'd been around enough and they didn't have to dumb down what they were saying or explain why we had to leave our expensive gear and run like hell when certain alarms went off.

My first worry was indeed about the metal oxiding or even corroding/rusting... good to know.

Ok thanks you all, I'll try with a matte black pen first as suggested... it's not a big deal, just a bit annoying having chipped paint on a fairly new body right there were you always look.

The same goes for hard-hats. You don't want to put your life in the hands of the guy with the shiny new $8 Home Depot hard-hat.

Eventually, you have to take your baby out of the cradle to go outside and play - where boo-boos can happen. Don't wear your camera on a strap around your neck while getting into or out of a car. I have dinged a few cameras and cars that way.
