Pentax K-3 Black Frame Noise Reduction?

Hello, I just recently learned about black frame noise reduction, an option on some cameras for long exposures.

I recently did some night photography with my K-3 and took some exposures around 45 seconds to a minute or two. After each shot, the camera flashed "NR" and counted down from, I can't remember specifically but was something around 20 or so seconds.

I haven't read anything about the K-3 having a black frame noise reduction feature, but that NR countdown seems like it could be doing that.

Wondering if anyone knows for sure.

Thank you,

You can turn off dark frame subtraction on the K-3:

Menu 2 > Slow Shutter Speed NR > Off

Thanks very much! Didn't realize the K-3 had that feature. Thanks again.

Isn't the black frame in night landscape a good thing?

Most definitely, I wasn't interested in turning it off, but wondering if that was in fact the feature I was seeing. I hadn't realized it was the same thing as slow shutter speed NR.

Yes, but you really only need one or a few dark frames, that you could expose yourself leaving the lens cap on. Then use software to subtract it later, which allows you to skip the process while shooting. It can suck waiting equal amounts of time in between long exposures, like when shooting star trails.

If you have the feature enabled (and I think it is enabled by default), it will automatically do dark frame reduction when the shutter speed is a couple seconds long. It is quite useful, but sometimes you don't have the time to wait for a whole dark frame. And for those times, you can disable it.
Also, if you are doing long exposures, be sure to use a stable base (tripod) and 2sec timer (this includes automatic mirror lockup). Bonus points for remote.
