K3 to KS2

Hi all

After my woes with the K3 I'm seriously thinking of buying a new KS2 would I loose much in IQ if I went this route
anyone compared IQ on these cameras.
I want to stick with Pentax until FF comes out.

I bet you wouldn't notice any drop in IQ. Probably all you lose is 4 MP worth of pixels.
I think there are some features on the K-3 that aren't on the KS2 (like interval shooting maybe? or all those bracketing modes?).
If you don't use those features now you will probably never miss them.

K-S2 has no top LCD, lesser AF module, 12-bit raw, less buttons (no AF-mode, for example), single SD, less FPS, less rugged... On the other hand it is lighter, wifi, nfc, colors, and especially the hinged LCD. I doubt most people could tell the difference in IQ, but for some 14-bit raw is a big draw...

I concur. I expect that biggest loss you will incur will be the money you spent on the K-3. I know you had a severe general fault with your K-3 that required more than one trip for service. If it were me, I would just go ahead and shoot with the K-3 since it still has most of its warranty intact rather than taking a bath selling it used and paying prime money for the K-S2.

You may even see an improvement...or at minimum a break-even. The below article specifically references the ks2.

Water getting cloudy here...requires that both camera and subject remain motionless...definitely would not be a general shooting mode. In addition, if offered as a firmware upgrade, it would likely be available for the K-3 as well.

Edit: It occurred to me that you might be referring to the enhanced skin tones and "clarity" feature available for K-S2 JPEGs (specific references in the linked article). It is hard to say whether those might be back-ported to the K-3.

Having both cameras in my hands I would still opt for the K-3 if I could only choose one of the two. It feels more solid, has a more comfortable grip, and a quieter shutter. In daylight the image quality is comparable, but the K-3 pulls ahead in terms of dynamic range and noise.

Pentax actually made the K-S2's grip smaller compared to the K-50, so it doesn't balance as well as with medium and large lenses.

The K-S1 and K-S2 share the same sensor, so you might want to give this page a read:
