Sigma 150-500 compatibility question

I think this may be a simple question for any Pentax user, but I need to know for sure.

I'm offered a used Sigma 150-500mm, the OS model, which the owner says is compatible with Nikon or Pentax. Is this even possible?

He says he has used it only on Nikon, but his information says it's compatible with Nikon or Pentax.

Thanks for any input!

Jack

Two different mounts.

Nikon F-mount - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pentax K-mount - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If it was an older Nikon F-mount with an aperture ring it could be used with a mount replacement like the Adaptist Multi-Mount.

Thanks folks! I figured it was too good to be true. I've been looking for one of these lenses with OS for awhile. As I understand it, the new lenses for Pentax don't have the in lens OS.

On another note. This forum is amazing for fast responses. Makes the DP Review Pentax forum look like it's stuck in molasses,....

Which new lens? The newer Pentax version of the 150-500 has OS. It works quite well too. The new Pentax 150-450 does not have OS, because Pentax has SR in the camera they don't need to build OS into the lens.

Right. I know Pentax and Sony have in camera IS. However, some prefer the more stabilized "look" through a stabilized lens. Tamron and Sigma have quit stabilizing lenses for Pentax and Sony, since, as you say, those cameras have built in camera body IS.

The ads for the Sigma 150-500 for Canon, Nikon etc show OS in the description. For the Pentax and Sony, the description does not show OS. I pretty sure it's been removed on the latest lenses. As recently as a year ago, this lens was stabilized for ALL cameras. It was nice to have the option to use it or not. I wish I had bought one then.

Sigma 150-500

I have the Sigma APO DG 150-500 with OS. But of course the OS doesn't work on the K3; it is the Pentax SR in camera that does the job and very well I might add. (see Icebreaker Photo which was hand held). All the auto stuff works very well even with Pentax 1.4 X TC (need good light when extended of course) . You would loose all the auto if you could find an adapter from Nikon to Pentax K. You would be back to Square one with an excellent lens but all manual.

He probably looked on Sigma's website and has no idea what he's talking about. The lens is *available* for Nikon and Pentax (as well as a couple others), so in a general sense, it is compatible with all those bodies... but his specific lens is nikon mount, and won't work on Pentax. And it's not one of the lenses that's available for Sigma's mount change service (not that i can see much point to that, anyway, unless they've reduced the cost of it dramatically below the cost of just selling the lens and buying a used one with the correct mount)

The in lens OS works just fine.

1/125s @500mm, handheld (Maybe not a fair test because SR was still turned on, OS + SR is usually bad...)

Take a look through my Flickr feed. Pretty much everything after June 13th is taken with the 150-500 and handheld or on a monopod. OS set to 1 and SR turned off with a K-5. Only the last 2 albums are with the K-3.

Can't you turn off the IS on the camera if you prefer to use the lens IS? I thought you could and know you could on a Sony.

Yes. SR is turned off most of the time on my camera. In fact, I forget to turn SR back on when I'm not using the lil'Bigma too often...

SR should be turned off when using a tripod, same with OS.

The lens OS doesn't work on the K3 for sure. Its the Pentax SR in camera that's doing the job - (See Sigma' s Spec Sheet) My Purchase paperwork appears to indicate that the lens OS is still there in the pentax mount just not active for Pentax which doesn't matter .

Sigma's site Shows no OS for Pentax, Sony Minolta but my documents show it is there of what use I haven't a clue . Also NO APERTURE RING FOR Nikon as well as Pentax so cant even use as manual ?

This one is 1/250s @500mm with SR turned off.

You can actually see the difference in the viewfinder when you turn the OS off. It is much shakier.

This is what the Sigma Japan website says...

The US Sigma site is wrong.

You're right 2 different answers for the same basic info I'll go for Japan site where its made. Both sites say that the Pentax 1.4X TC is not compatible but when I briefly tried it was Functioning albeit it was very brief so I will do an in depth and get back to the forum.
