Why do you say that?

I think that I'd use that for moving subjects with MF lenses (prefocused), or group shots, maybe (that is, if I had the K-3).

All you have to do is set the camera to shutter priority (as opposed to focus priority) in the menus and shoot away until the subject changes position. Set to shutter priority, the camera doesn't stop to refocus between images.

I use it all the time taking pics at the race track. i usually pre focus but when a subject is moving across your line of sight as opposed to towards you, the focus tracking works really well

I use the Pentax 8.3 fps feature to always bracket every shot: +1, 0, -1 stops. 90% of the time the "normal" exposure is the one I use. But occasionally the darker or lighter one is the better of the three. And sometimes HDR is the right choice. The cost is disk space. But the benefit is more flexibility.

Since the camera doesn't track extremely well I use it more hoping to get one in focus.... Mostly for birds in flight.

Granted I have a k5 and 7 frames a second.

I use it all the time... when you shoot at events, people don't usually pose for you and especially for group shots, people tend to blink their eyes. The only down side is that you can run up your shutter count quickly on the camera.

I have often wondered if 8.3 us some kind of technical limit, like it you just fired the shutter somehow as fast as it would go. Actually checking the images times to see how many frames per second I get in the field the fastest I've ever actually counted, was about 6 FPS. Which is still pretty good.

Use the 8.3 fps when shooting aircraft and have had many 23 shot burst without an out of focus shot.

Sports/anything in motion (obviously), portraits with a f/1.4 or other super-fast lens, and with super resolution. For example, shooting a 'keeper during a PK? You will never time it perfectly so you use the burst made. When shooting portraits with a razor-thin DOF it is sometimes easier to shoot manually with the 8.3 fps (or whatever it is shooting RAW) and slowly move the focus figuring so that at least one image will be focused where you want it. Super resolution? GOOGLE it and you will see.

8.3 fps also means 0.120/sec between shots. This does not mean you need to take 8 shots for it be of value. From shutter click, the 3rd shot is taken in less then a quarter of a sec and as MJSfoto1956 posted, this is a good benefit with bracketing.

This is where back button focus works well. I often focus on a bird perching, and when it takes off hit the shutter button to get as many frames as possible.

I used it for my grandson's high school graduation to capture the moment of him receiving his diploma. This was taken from about 100 yards away with the 18-135mm WR. My K-3 took about 15 shots in quick succession, and I selected the best one - his eyes were open, good smile, etc. Never would have been possible without "rapid fire." 1/500 sec., f/10, ISO 640, 135mm (202mm full frame equivalent). Perfect application.
