A K3 focuses as fast as Canon/Nikon in AF-S mode. It is in AF-C mode that it struggles. On the other hand, Phil is right that the K3 and K5 II are designed to focus in lower light than most Canon/Nikon APS-C models available can focus in. It is pretty amazing how they grab focus when it is virtually dark.

Canon and Nikon may only focus down to -2EV or something like that, but it is possible that they are faster at it then the K-3 is. And according to Popular Photography, they are, though the difference is actually less than I expected:

The whole astro tracer thing is a red herring. It is that fact that Pentax has chosen to have in body image stabilization that a lot of Pentax's stand out features happen. Besides the fact that you can have a stabilized 50mm f1.2 ancient prime, you have the ability to shift the sensor, allow the camera to straighten your photos, and use an astro tracer. These are things that Canon/Nikon camera can't/don't do. As to whether or not you use any of them, I don't know, but it is nice to have them.

I am aware of those extra capabilities you get with sensor-shift stabilisation, the latest being pixel shift resolution. However sensor-shift stabilisation also has a disadvantage: the viewfinder and AF images are not stabilised. This may be a deal-breaker for some as well.

As to Ken Rockwell, of course he is entitled to have an opinion. But hopefully it is an opinion based on fact. When he writes a whole little essay about how the boxes that Pentax cameras come in reveal that they are cheap, crappy cameras, it makes you wonder a little bit.

I agree it would help if he said why he finds Canon/Nikon more refined.

It may be the world's best - for him. If he knows what is important to him he can make that choice well.

None, although I have shot a Nikon from a friend once or twice (for example, on a photography trip to Iceland).

I think anyone who reads this review realizes that it isn't a review. It is a bag full of hyperbole and minimal information. Saying "Pentax stinks" or "Nikon stinks" is the sort of thing that maybe generates web clicks, but it certainly doesn't actually let you understand if a camera's strengths are important to you and its weaknesses are things you can live with. And that's exactly what you don't get from Rockwell.
