K3II/DFA 150-450: Deer Love Canola

If you are not from the Canadian prairies or the US Great Plains, you may not have heard of canola, a yellow flowered oilseed crop. This past week I was driving on my motorcycle in SW Alberta and stopped to take some pictures of a canola field in flower. While observing the field for a good perspective for a landscape photo, I spotted something sticking up among the yellow flowers in the field (Photo 1). Upon further observation, I noticed deer horns appearing in the crop and it became obvious that the deer were eating the famers canola crop (Photo 2). So I started walking towards the deer horns to get a closer shot of the deer. The deer didn't notice me at first as they were so busy eating. Finally when I got quite close they started poking their head abive the crop to look at me (Photo 3).
The first photo was with a Panny FZ 1000 while pics 2 and 3 were with the K3II, DFA 150-450 and the HD 1.4 adapter.

Cool photos. Those canola yellows are lovely.

I'm also very interested in how you carry a big rig like the K-3II + 150-450 on a motor bike.

I have a photo backpack that fits in a bag attached to my sissy bar. The DFA 150-450, while a big lens fits nicely in the bottom of my photo backpack. To make the K3II as small as possible, I transport it using the DA 40mm XS lens. Using the motorcycle to transport is a lot easier than my own back!

Great pictures, did you use the DA 150-450 handheld or with a tripod or monopod? I am very interested in user experiences with his lens, especially if you must use a tripod or if it can be used handheld.

I used the DFA 150-450 hand held. I find that the SR on the K3II does indeed work better.

jayman_1975: Good catch. I love those yellow fields.

jddwoods: There is a thread in the lens forum sub forum dedicated to this lens. The top three photographs on page 14 were take by me and were all handheld. I took them the day the lens arrived. I just had to try it out. I am 64 and not as steady as I used to be, but it can be done if you are careful. The beast does weigh 5.5 pounds. I have to approach the photo like I do when shooting offhand (standing). Make myself as steady as possible, calm down and take the shot between breaths. When in the field hunting or photographing, you use the same techniques.

FWIW, I do know a few people (not me on my best day ever) who can hit a 12" target at 1,000 yards while standing using open sights (no scope) on their rifles. These guys are like human tripods. It would be awesome to be that steady.

Canola was first developed in Canada, but you might be surprised how much more is grown around the world now (see the stats here: Rapeseed Oil Production by Country in 1000 MT - Country Rankings), even in my little corner of it. Fields of canola make for pleasant viewing, however few countries offer photo opportunities like the ones you've captured here. I particularly like the way the light picks out the edges of the antlers in the second and third photos. Thanks for sharing them.

Nice work Dale. The second shot is really interesting, with just the antlers in view.
