External power for K-3

I'm interested in photographing star trails and other night time images. With this type of photography, your battery can run out-even mine with the battery grip. How can I hook up an external power battery to the K-3 to keep it firing? I noticed there is a 8.3 DC input on the camera. What is that for?

There is the Pentax AC Adapter Kit K-AC132U.

There is also this, which is much cheaper:

Sounds like you are looking for something like Bob cooked up:

DIY Power Supply for Pentax K5 DSLR

I used it as the template for the one I use with a jumpstart battery as the power source.

Holly smokes! Not a lot of options! Why did Pentax come up with that funky DC input!

Bob mentioned that his K-5 got three hours of usage. If my K-3 with two batteries can get 6 hours, I should be OK? Anyone tried the battery grip for long exposures star shots?

Rawr, do you have experience of that Amazon unit? Would you recommend it?

Cheers

The amazon link is not for the K-3, it's for the K-30, which I guess doesn't have a DC input jack?

This is the one for the K-3. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J5GDSFY

I have it, I've used it a couple times, and it hasn't set the house or the camera on fire. I haven't used it regularly or for very long, it was mostly just to test it out, and once to try and capture some lightning shots when I didn't have any fully charged batteries handy (the storm did not cooperate). It doesn't seem flimsy or cheap or anything. Pretty comparable to most other power supply type things I have laying around from various devices.

narual, are you sure? That link goes to the k-7/k-5 one (HQRP AC Adapter for Pentax K-AC50), but I thought the k-3 one is the later model, the HQRP AC Adapter for Pentax K-AC132

The Amazon link Rawr posted goes to "HQRP AC Power Adapter for PENTAX K-30, K-50, K-500 SLR Digital Camera K-AC128 D-AC128 D-DC128 D-Li109 Power Supply Cord + Euro Plug Adapter" - you can see that there's a thing that looks like a battery with a wire coming out of it.

My link goes to "HQRP AC Adapter for Pentax K-AC50 39365 39364 fits K5 K7 K10D K20D K645 Digital SLR Camera Power Supply Cord K-5 K-7 K-10D K-20D K-645 + Euro Plug Adapter"

I see there's also a "HQRP AC Adapter for Pentax K-AC132 38780 fits K-3, K-5II, K-5IIs Digital SLR Camera Power Supply Cord + Euro Plug Adapter" at this address: http://www.amazon.com/HQRP-Adapter-Pentax-K-AC132-Digital/dp/B00RGSSTIO -- but they appear to be identical items.

I just tested mine on the K5 and K3 bodies and snapped a shot of each for reference - you can see that both bodies recognized that they were connected to external power.

AC adapters aren't particularly special or smart devices. As long as the shape of the connector is right and they're outputting the correct amount of power, they're pretty much interchangeable.

In the case of the assorted bodies, they use the same shaped connector and require 8.3v/2A, so there's no reason one wouldn't work on all the bodies that have those requirements.

That makes sense...Now to do a quick survey of adapters...

This thread explains what's going on with these differing power adapters for k-3 and k-5. Allegedly it was some EU thing so they had to make new components. So just for the record, Pentax recommends K-AC50E for K-7, K-5 then started recommending K-AC132 for K-3, which might look like a completely new component but in fact the K-AC50E and clones will work fine on K-3.

The genuine adapter works awesome.
Expensive, sure, but OEM always is and give peace of mind.
