598 RAW on 32GB SanDisk is not right

I use these SanDisk cards:
SanDisk 32GB Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC U3 Extreme Pro Memory Card (Class 10)

I shoot only DNG raw. The camera display shows that I can hold 598 pics per card. This is not true. I can fit over 1000 RAW files per card. According to my PC, 500 RAW files is only 14GB. Why is this? Does the K3 just assume that a RAW file is a certain size and bases the number displayed off of the size of the card inserted?

I think so.

Yup (and I believe all cameras work this way). It assumes some larger-than-normal size just to be safe.

What the camera gives you is basically the worst-case scenario. Remember that raw file size increases the higher your ISO.

My DNG files range from 26mb to 46mb on the k-3 so there is a lot of variance. As noted already the number displayed is just an estimate.

Exactly. So unless one shoots shoot RAW at ISO 100 all the time, there is going to be a lot of variation.

If you really want to maximize the number of shots you can fit on your card, you should specialize in photographing black cats in the dark at ISO 100.

My K-3 claims 1182 RAW files can be stuffed into an empty 64 GB card. That's pretty close to your 598 * 2 since you have a 32 GB card.

File size does not equate to disk space. Think a round ball in a square box, there is a lot of unused space. Depending on how the disk is formatted, a combination of sector size and file size will determine how many images will fit.
