line sensor

Are the line sensor points an autofocus point?

If so, why are they sticks?

Yes, both + and | points are autofocus points. Cross sensor points are effective for both horizontally and vertically textured surfaces, while the "line" sensor points can struggle when focussing on materials with a linear texture, such as a corrugated steel roof. On my old SFX I had to focus by turning the camera to portrait position if I wanted to focus on something like a picket fence. With newer cameras, the + focus points solve that problem.

Your image show the K-5 AF point pattern, not K-3 AF.

K-3 AF looks like this:
