I do find it interesting that Pentax's retrograde, single-digit, odd-integer numbering scheme for their prosumer models has backed them into a numerical corner, so to speak. Now that we're at "1" no odd numbers are left. It's perhaps why the "KP" has the name it has.
There's absolutely zero chance that Pentax will name any new camera K-3 III. It's just a convenient way of saying "K-3 II successor".

I really wish Pentax had made a K-3 III, taking the K-3 II and adding the improvements they put into the KP. It would have been a perfect camera for me, even if it would have left a lot of other people underwhelmed.

That is why I have been referring to it as the K-3x for some time. Who knows what they will call it? Any nomenclature we use it just a place holder.

The also had K-S1 and K-S2 "between" K-50 and K-70.

K-3 Plus sounds amazing, though... Or K-3 Prime, K-3 Ultra... so many greek words to enjoy! :-)

Maybe finding a new name is what is holding up the new camera

Perhaps Pentax should ask PF to hold a naming contest.

Of course there is a risk that "K-Camera McCameraface" might win.

My vote goes for K-pi: just a little irrationally better than a K-3.

Certainly it's going to be hard to do worse than my first Pentax DSLR, the *ist-DS.

Good one! Perhaps use the Greek alphabet instead (K-π)? I hope that character shows up on your screens.

I still have my *istD, but the origin of the name remains a mystery to me.

They'd have to assign it another name first, so everyone could refer to it as "the camera formerly known as ----"

The naming convention used will depend upon how much of an upgrade it is. When Pentax gives the II designation to a new model it has indicated marginal improvements. This goes all the way back to the Spotmatic II. If they give it a new processor, autofocus system etc it may not even carry the "K3" designation at all. Maybe even a gasp!!!!! An even number!!!! Hey it is the 21st Century and all.

It's been so long since the K-3II was introduced, which after all was an update model, and now five or six months since it was discontinued, I'm sure the new top-of-the-line APS-C model will have an entirely new name, not just a K-X number (which would have to be an even number now in the unlikely event they do that). I'm surprised there isn't already a pool to guess it. But I do like K-π.

Of course, maybe Ricoh won't ever release a replacement. Owners of the KP seem to be pretty happy with that model, which has perhaps unintentionally been plugging that hole in the line-up. Personally, it wasn't the camera for me - I chose the discontinued K-3II instead - but I don't think my needs were typical (e.g., built-in AstroTracer functionality was a big draw for me but won't be for most people). I know Ricoh has said they are working on a K-3II replacement, but in the end it's a business decision. If sales of the KP and K-1II are good enough, they may decide not to do it and instead divert whatever development they were doing on it elsewhere. I worked on product development (design engineering) for 35 years and saw that happen multiple times.

PS. Perhaps I should have put my asbestos suit on before typing that last comment in a thread entitled "The K-3 line will continue!"!

I do wonder if Pentax will go away from the "K" series of cameras and start another naming tradition. I had thought for full frame they would go to LX as a tip of the hat to the past. But since their numbers are going down the only thing less than 3 and more than 1 is 2 (K-2 doesn't seem right), unless they start using fractions or decimals, which also doesn't right.

Maybe bring back the MX series of cameras?
