weird image numbering bug

Just had the weirdest thing happen to me; I turned off my camera and the pictures starting counting again, but 500 lower.
Meaning it went from 1618 to 1119, so now I have duplicate names for anything between 1119-1618. I almost crapped my pants thinking I lost some pictures but so glad I didn't. Anyone else encounter this?

At any point in time, the next file number will be 1 plus the largest number in the current folder, or if the current folder is empty, the most recent folder. So, if you delete files it is possible to bump the counter down as well.

Note that this in no way affects the camera's shutter count. You'll still be able to sort your images by date or shutter count (using a free tool such as Adobe Bridge CC) and rename them with sequential numbers if desired.

This is one reason I never delete files in-camera. I always chuck the bad ones in post.

It can happen if you reuse another memory card which has a lower (or higher) photo number still on it. If you do not reformat the card, the camera will start numbering photos at the current photo number still on the card + 1.

I dump everything except the last image and the last folder so the numbers stay more or less in sequence.
