Thinking of buying a k-3

I just looked at a K-3 that looked to be ln almost brand new condition, very clean. It does have an issue though,it does not save the date and time when the battery is removed. The price of the camera is $320 with a 2 week return for any reason policy and a limited 180 day warranty.Does anyone have any knowledge of this particular issue and what are your thoughts on the deal?

It sounds like the small internal battery or capacitor that maintains the internal setting when you change batteries no longer works.

Should be a simple repair job at a service centre.

I'd probably get it done because it might be loosing more settings than just the date and time when the battery is removed.

As an alternative to the repair you could always get the battery grip and set the camera to use the grip's battery first. With two batteries in - one in the camera and one in the grip - the camera's battery would last a long time and would maintain the internal settings while the grip's battery would need to be regularly charged.

Regards

Chris

I would be curious as to the actual age of the camera and its shutter count, especially if it's run through its internal battery....

Although a simple repair for a shop, I’m quite sure you can find one working properly for the cost of that one plus less than the repair would cost you. As pepperberry said, I’d question the age and usage (shutter count) of it.

I'd buy it. While the lost settings and loss of time are annoying I could live with it for that price. I'd check shutter count however as others have said.

Do it. It's a great camera. A small fix isn't bad.

Check the world time setting - it could be set to the wrong time zone.

I think you'd do fine with a K3, but not sure I'd go through the added repair cost to replace the interior battery and I too think that you would probably lose more of your set up configuration than just the time and date. Anyway, I recently bought a used K3 from B&H for $425.00 and it's in great shape. It came with only 1800 shutter cycles and the only wear I could find was that the writing on the menu button is beginning to fade a bit, virtually a new camera. Good luck and good shooting to all.

That K3 should be just fine I think it is a good price as is. I got one with 4k shutter count for $395, it got stolen a month later, so when insurance money came in I searched around in the marketplace and found one with 300 shutter count (brand new condition, sat in a bag for three years) for $400. they are easy to find in good condition for cheap. thats how I purchase most of my bodies now

Might even be fixed with a software update. Sounds like a great deal.

Go for it. If you have 2 weeks to return, you can try to software update and you may even find the issue is exaggerated. Plus you can check the shutter count. K-3 is an awesome camera. I've put about 40k shots on mine over 2 years. I love it!

Try it for a couple of weeks and see if there are any other issues. If not, then for the price seems like a reasonable deal.

I have decided that it would be more prudent to buy a K-3 that is not defective from the start and have found a number of options in the $380-$400 range in excellent condition with 180 day warranties. What do you guys think of these 2 lenses I am thinking of pairing up with the K-3?...

Pentax 16-45mm F/4 SMC DA ED AL ($140)

Pentax 35-70mm F/3.5-4.5 SMC F ($50)

16-45 is good, but it has a reputation for weak build and wobbly lens when extended. The 35-70 has a following, just remember that it will be more of a normal to short Tele than the wide to barely Tele it was on film due to crop. I really like the 17-70 if you find one cheap and working. (Sdm issues hurt this lens)
