An arduino is kind of like the RPi but it is substantially lower really being a micro controller instead of a system on a chip. It has pretty good IO ability limited memory and a slow single core processor. Like the RPi it is well documented and supported but fills a niche below that of a RPi. For something like a DIY IR intervolmeter it would be an easy way to accomplish it. I understand the need to not want to touch the camera as I do astro as well but if you are using astrotracer you can still use a regular IR remote but get the joy of pushing the button every time which is what I get to do since I don't have an intervolmeter. That will come when I get an equatorial and don't have to recompose every few shots.
