Mad question

Why does the shutter sound so different to my K-7. It's more metallic, like a gun bolt cycling. Just pure curiosity on new years day.

I like a clean sound. The shutter of the K-70 is very loud, although pleasing.

I've noticed the sound can be slightly different with different lenses. I used to have a Tamron 70-200/2.8, the combination (K-50 or K-30 at the time) always made a "plunk", kind of an echoing sound. I think it has to do with the cavity from the lens mount to rear element. It's always interesting to hear the different sound when you around several other photographers, some of the Canons are really loud.

Your K-3 has a shutter with a life expectancy of 200,000 clicks. It's 100,000 for the K-7, so there's definitely a difference in the mechanism between the two. Mirror slap and lens aperture actuation also add to the overall sound. With my KP in live view and set to electronic shutter, taking a picture is nearly silent. I haven't tried this with the lens set to max aperture, but that would probably eliminate all sound except that of my finger on the shutter button. Stealth mode.

Happy New Years!

Many factors including the mirror movement mechanism, the focal plane shutter, the size of the mirror, the camera shell and shape, pentamirror vs. pentaprism vs. EVF, weather sealing of camera and/or lens, condition of mirror shock absorber material, temperature, lens shape and construction, shooting OVF vs. live view, and no doubt more.

My Pentax 645 is a head turner, in part because of the huge mirror, my smaller primes, and the film advance motor, but not as ridiculous as a Bronica.

The D500 makes me cringe every time I hear it in the field.
