If that is the system I saw a show about then it is made up of a whole bunch of point-n-shoot camera sensors to get that resolution. But typical P&S sensors have poor dynamic range but I guess they don't need that.

I can imagine importing an image from this to Photoshop and doing some fancy layers work !

That sensor is on a full 4 inch wafer by the looks of it, Lenses designed to cover that kind of format are easier to design than 35mm format lenses.
