Most are probably on their second camera body which is pretty darn good. It's so good that they really see no reason to upgrade to anything new. There will always be a few who have to have the latest and greatest but the time of explosive growth is over. They have to find some way to convince people that the awesome camera they bought just a year or two ago for a few thousand $$$$ is now junk. It's not working very well.
I think there's a lot of truth to this, since I know several people who are perfectly happy with their long-in-the-tooth DSLR's.
For example, one co-worker has a Nikon D70 that he and his wife bought years ago, and even though they mostly use compacts, he still brings the D70 out for "good" pictures. I once mentioned something to him about upgrading, but then I felt a little guilty since he is perfectly happy with the camera and is even a little proud of it, so I didn't bring it up again.
