If you use focus peaking on a long-ish lens and wider aperture, you can see your focus plane highlight pretty well, it's pretty cool to see on something like 50mm f1.7. On a 28mm f3.5, it's practically useless.

I've tried it with many lenses, and I just find that magnification is more accurate.
I've spent an entire evening/night at f/2 on a 50mm and never had to worry about focus, all pictures were sharp exactly where I wanted them to be.

Hmm... I have a few pinhole cameras made out of coffee cans but I now have an urge to make one out of a beer can. Not a beer drinker myself but the black Guiness cans are pretty sexy, I'd just need to find a volunteer to empty one for me.

Heck use a Holga for a while and any digital camera will feel like a walk in the park.
