It is like all buzz words and jargon. I personally have very little time for people who use such terms, to me, they are trying to impress people, usually in areas where they don't actually have a clue.

Given my opinion of such people, if this is a friend, who shoots a lot and got you interested into photography, maybe politely tell him that a lot of people turn off when they hear jargon and such, and generally think less of the people who use the terms.
