I worry that this is considered remarkable because she's a Filipina domestic servant. If you look at her background and blog you'll see she studied photography at college. She's also clearly highly literate and particularly computer literate. So here's an educated, talented person who because of her particular circumstances ends up as a domestic servant in Hong Kong. What's remarkable is, despite her talents, she had to spend time as a domestic servant. It's not really a story of someone being discovered as a talented photographer despite being a Filipina domestic servant, with all the connotations of race and class.

Many of those who work as maids do so because they earn more doing that than their professional qualifications, which may be high, would enable at home. I have even heard of doctors working as maids.

Well done to anyone who wins a Magnum scholarship... without any regards to background or circumstances, it's a great life opportunity.

Actually, it is. Filipinos are regarded as servant class in many Asian and Middle Eastern countries, despite their education.

But then maybe 30 years ago, a friend married a Chinese girl. Eventually the marriage broke up because of social pressure from the Chinese community, who claimed she'd married a barbarian. Sometimes it's better to just not know what these people you let immigrate to your country really think of you.
