A Red Lens Hood??

Recently I saw a photographer in a club shooting with a long zoom; it looks like he had painted the lens hood red. Wouldn't that add a red tint to the photos?

Do you get a black tint with your regular hoods?

Several aftermarket hoods are available in colors. To each his own, I guess.

Black is not a color, red is though.

Red reflection off the inside of the hood could be a problem. If you want a red hood, it would be best to paint the inside flat black.

I don't recall saying it was. You asked about tint and tinting can certainly be black.

Tint = color
Black blocks all colors; red blocks all colors except red.
The faux-tographer was using a hood that was painted on the inside as well.

It would be much cooler with a transparent lens hood.

Semantics. :-P

The "tint" of the shadow depends on the color of the light creating that shadow, not the color of the object casting the shadow.

An orange street lamp will cast a blue-ish shadow. The warm yellow sun casts a cool shadow. Cool blue LEDs cast a warm shadow. It doesn't matter if the shadow-caster is hot pink or olive green. (Or red.)

I would expect the performance to suffer since reflected light from the non-black inside surface will be brighter and likely reduce contrast compared to a black hood.

...and much less effective!

Which goes back to the question of color. A red hood would not help with long wavelength flare.

A lens hood is a tool first and foremost, not a fashion accessory. The inside should be dark and non-reflective to do the job. The outside can be any color (assuming you don't need stealth for wildlife photography).

The shiny red hood in the sample photo above isn't a good idea. Compared to a black hood, it will reflect extra light into the lens, especially red, decreasing contrast and maybe adding a reddish cast.

Now that's certainly discrete for a bit of "street" photography.
