6MP on Epson R-D1 was up to date when released in 2004, but not when discontinued in 2014, and the reason might have been that 6MP sensor was no longer available. They had produced three version of the camera, but no major changes in hardware was done during the 10 years of production. Had they updated hardware when releasing new versions in 2006 and 2009, the camera it might still been produced today. But I guess Epson had no resources for making the necessary changes.
The R-D1x version was released in 2009 (a few week before Pentax K7 was released), when most other APS-C cameras had 12+ MP CMOS sensors, so a CCD sensor of 6MP was not up to date. Especially not on a $3000 camera.
