Police: Man arrested at Capitola Beach for taking photos of girl

CAPITOLA, Calif. —A Soquel man was arrested at Capitola Beach over the weekend on suspicion of taking photographs of a 15-year-old girl.

Many families were at the beach enjoying sunny weather Sunday afternoon when a witness noticed a man photographing a girl without the girl's knowledge and called police.

Police said they found the suspect and identified him as 58-year-old Bruce Eric Inman.

"Inman admitted to his actions and was arrested," Capitola police said.

Inman was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on charges of annoying a minor. He was released in lieu of $20,000 bail.

And when did it become a crime to take photos in a public place? Or is there more to the story? People give away so much privacy online and then scream when someone takes a photo? I know the guy could be slime but motive isn't crime. What happens with the pictures after is important. Innocent posting of a scenic beach with a girl in it - or telephoto + photoshop = porn star shots... so fragile this world.

Doesn't compute, unless there is a different definition to "annoying" than mine.

The "police state" is real and it's in, "The Greatest Country In The World"™

If this guy was on the up and up and not objectifying this girl or approaching her in some untoward manner there are some serious problems with our culture.

$20,000 bail? there has to be more to this story. That is like the bail for first degree assault

The code in question that he was arrested under specifically cites 'lewd' and 'sexually motivated' and several other things of that nature. It's classified as a sex crime so that should tell you all you need to know. It had to have pretty obvious sexual content of whatever he was doing to be able to arrest someone on those charges.

Edit:

"According to California Penal Code section 647.6, it is illegal to annoy or molest a child under the age of 18 while motivated by an unnatural sexual interest in the child."

sounds messed up to me.
Hopefully there is more to this story.
Otherwise photographers all over the world are in danger of "someone feeling annoyed" by what you are doing.

Without seeing the police report or interviewing any of the witnesses it's a little difficult to judge the situation.

Media always goes for maximum outrage impact... It's not the full story. He could well have history.

I live in the area and last week someone was taking pictures of a naked seven year old girl at one of the beach showers. It could be someone being extra sensitive, it could be someone being extra politically correct (when I managed a camera store in Santa Cruz I had an employee who felt that naked toddler bathtub pictures were inappropriate and a competing store had an employee refuse to print a photo of a woman in a bikini laying on a car) or it could be that we only know part of the story. Even here there is sketchy information.

I saw that story on the naked 7 year old - odd to say the least. The whole story in this case makes little sense. Girl unaware of being photographed, man charged with annoying a minor. How do you annoy someone you haven't made aware that you are there? I think there is some confusion in the story writing that is making this seem like a different thing than it is. Hope it gets clearer - puts a chill on street photography in some ways at least as reported.

I'm really surprised at this... I think 99% of parents in my country have a photo of their baby in a tub. It's perfectly normal, and people who think otherwise are not (normal). This is just my opinion of course.
For the second part, woman in a bikini laying on a car... that employee must be some religious fanatic or something. I don't get it

lol now that might explain it!

But seriously, this is why I am so timid when I go into crowded places with my camera. Sometimes I get these almost shocked looks from people who assume I want to take a photo of them, just because i have a camera (not even necessarily pointed at a subject). And I really just want to loudly say "move out of my frame, ugly"
I realize its especially iffy if there are minors involved, but there is far too much fear in our society. Almost like there is a murderous predator hiding in every bush - and their weapon of choice is a camera.
