Hey all,

I am forced to make a decision of either purchasing the K3 or the Tamron F2.8 70-200. I currently own the K30 with adequate lenses but nothing like the Tamron. I shoot my son's baseball games and auditorium showchoir events so I need a good lens that can cover both fairly well. But I also want the new technology that will give me better photos. I can afford just one of these, but not both, at this time.

Up for debate; I would like anyone's opinion of which they think is more important, camera or lens, and the reasoning. The K30 is good but I really want the pixels...

Thanks for any insight you may be able to give me on this.

James
Thanks everyone for your input. I have decided to go with the lens...now all I have to do is find one in the 6-700 range.

Good choice going the Tamron. Now they have been discontinued by Tamron once shops sell their stock, you wont get it again. They are not available in Australia. So by one ASAP before they are all sold and your only choice in the 70-200F2.8 is the Pentax one released sometime early next year, at over $2000.

Plus you'll be able to update your camera in the future, as Pentax will have the K3/K3-ll or it's successor available for a long time.

You very seldom go wrong with investing in glass. Some of the lenses I use these days have seen my camera bodies go from MX...to K2...to LX...to K10D...to K01. And I hope they'll see my digital FF camera one of these days. For what it's worth...the price jumps in those bodies go from $75 to $50 to $450 to $1000 to $600...as my lens prices remain pretty stable.

UPDATE;

Well I ended up getting a used Tamron 70-200 F2.8 at a pretty nice price. So far this lens looks like a deal/steal. I posted a pic I took yesterday. Let me know what you think.

Great pickup. And if you get the Pentax FF one day, you're all sorted at the long end.

Thanks, and I could only hope I can get the FF some day. Price will dictate that one...

I second going for the lens, rather than upgrading. I've wanted a 70-200 2.8 for a while, but haven't found a good enough deal on one yet...

I took a chance on ebay from a new seller and got mine in the mid 400s. It turned out to be a good deal. Took a long time, but I finally found one.

Sounds like you were smart about it. Taking the route you did, even if you eventually decide the 70-200 is too heavy (or whatever), you should be able to recover a huge chunk of your expense.
