FOX??? Good grief!!!

I've been a member of National Geographic since the mid 1970s and my family subscribed to it a decade before that.

This sort of news may suggest I need to reconsider my membership!

I don't think it has. If NG changes or neglects its traditional market and role something else will come along to fill that. It will be more specialist, and more 'niche' most likely, but there is definitely a subscription base for that type of reporting and commentary. Any new venture will need assignment photographers.

FOX has run the TV channels for a while. That's why they are mostly "Reality" TV now...rebranded Nat Geo etc...

Thank goodness for that, Boris!

I know the family have the right to sell the business in the future to whomever they want, but ....

Sure, but with less income, you can't pay for as many photographers as before ... a lot of newspapers have laid off many togs.

I have observed that too. That is the business model transition that is going on. Someone will figure it out and make the new model work. No doubt they will do extremely well, then everyone will copy - such is the way these things work

The archives and the brand name are the only reason to purchase National Geographic. When NG was at its peak photography was still expensive and there was a market for images from around the world showing other cultures. Today everyone has a camera and I can search Youtube for HD video on just about any subject or culture. We have explored and photographed most of the world. The market that they served has changed. It has become saturated.

I can't imagine any educated person depending on FOX, MSNBC, or CNN for serious news. How much can you really get in a 30 second sound bite.

Question is: Has anyone seen these two in the same room at the same time? Might explain a lot.
