Even if I am just going down to the corner store, I bring my camera, sometimes I even remember to have an SD card in it.

That's why I bought a Q. Always in my backpack or coat pocket.

I keep my old Olympus XZ-1 in my car, and it has come in handy many times. The image quality is still outstanding, and I think you can pick one up for $100 or less these days.

I've been considering it or a Nikon 1.

What I've learned over the years:

- If I'm going out and want to see the same stuff over and over again, bring the camera gear.
- If I'm going out and want to see something really wonderful, leave the camera gear home.

Because that's just how my life works.
Yup, that sounds familiar.

Actually, a number of years ago, I had about a 50km commute in the country. Always had my camea with me and I've often thought of putting together a photobook of images taken on the commute. Since I've moved to South Western Ontario and my commute is 10 minutes, my camera mostly stays at home.

That's a time when you forget about the shot that you could have taken and just enjoy the moment for what it is.

Pics, or that enjoyable moment never happened.

The best camera is the camera you have with you...
More often than not, it's the one you left at home.

I'll open a can of worms with this but for what it's worth, I've snagged some awesome sunrise/sunset shots with my iPhone 5s.

I've seen some very nice photos taken with the iPhone, and I don't mean "nice for a cell phone".

Someday, you'll learn to bring your camera with you everywhere. And someday later, you'll learn that your time was better spent with your family and not glued to the camera.

Wisely spoken, and elegantly phrased, Eric. It encapsulates the dilemma between never-miss-a-shot (an illusion anyway) and being a social animal, or enjoying moments beyond their photographic dimension. Life is full of compromises and trade-offs. I've also found that despite that familiar experience of encountering one photographic opportunity after the other as soon as I leave the camera at home, my photography is more deliberate when I don't invariably bring my camera. That way it remains something special I keep looking forward to, rather than some slavish routine that insists to be followed. In fact, those occasions when I don't bring my camera often serve to give me ideas for future projects.

Was on a trip one time to get my son from SDSM in Rapid city around this time of year. Driving down I80 I saw an old homestead that had an tree with no leaves, golden tan grass filling the field in front of the old house and dark, menacing storm clouds in the background. Where is my camera? At home because this was a quick trip with no time to stop.
