Members of other forums?

I became a member of the Pentax forum because B&H highly recommended it as a great resource, and I agree. However, I also own Nikon cameras and recently joined their forum too. My first post, an intro of myself, took 4 days to post

Is anyone a member of another photography forum such as Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc? I am new to being on forums, but how do the other forums compare to this one? I am sooo impressed with the speed of this forum postings, candid and generous responses by members, and the overall collegiality.

You do know there is a Nikon/Canon forum on this site, right?

Non-Pentax Cameras: Canon, Nikon, etc. - PentaxForums.com

There is also a Nikon forum run by the same Administrator for PentaxForums.

I am also an active member of dslr-forum.de, the largest German photography forum (and despite its name it also caters to users of DSLMs and compacts). It's larger than PF, all major brands are represented and consequentially there's often a bit more open discussion. There is a subsection where beginners can ask for buying advise, and everyone joins in trying to help them find the best system for their needs. At the same time people can sometimes be a bit of a smart aleck, more so than here. But overall it's a good community.

I haven't really explored the non-Pentax Camera forum on this site...yet. Thanks for the reminder.

I wasn't specifically looking for any info by joining the NikonForum but was more curious about how the threads and interaction among members were similar or different. Or do most photographers only have one system or loyalty to one brand?

I did not know that the Administrator that runs PentaxForums also runs NikonForums. That's the other forum I've joined and have found, at least in the first week, that new posts take days to post and thus far, there seems to be much less participation of membership. If that were the case here, I'd be less engaged. But I'm a newbie to forums, so perhaps it's a skewed perception....thus my question....how do other forums compare with this one?

Very cool. I'll have to check out that forum. My son will be headed to the U. of Edinburgh next semester for a study abroad. Although he's an Electrical Mechanical engineering major, he's got a great eye with his Pentax K-50, and should eventually get his degree from R.I.T. in Rochester, in the shadow of Eastman Kodak. He's very excited about studying in Scotland and your great legacy of engineers.

I'm a member of several forums -Mostly large format, medium format digital (Lula) and 35mm film photography and darkroom specialist groups, membership to some of these online communities are based on paid subscriptions*. I also write camera and lens reviews for some of them.

Pentax forums is, from what I have experienced, a more relaxed forum than others. On other dedicated photography forums you get people who flip out over a speck of dust in their precious antique 50mm RF lens, and people who switch systems faster than a bipolar transistor for reasons that are, upon close inspection, merely superficial.

Pentaxians tend to be level headed and keep it real.

*certain leicaphile groups - they don't let in the Konica,Cosina,Epson and Zeiss rabble in without paying the Leica toll.

Well, I only happen to live in Scotland and am actually German, but thus the statement about the legacy of engineers still applies either way I bet he will enjoy his time in Scotland. Edinburgh is frequently ranked as among the most beautiful and liveable cities in the world, and then there are the highlands, of course

Even on Pentax Forums, my initial posts were delayed. The reason being that new members all posts get reviewed before posting. Fairly common on a lot of sites. Tends to keep the riffraff out. Once they see what an upstart guy you are, trust goes up. I can't blame the moderators and administrators for not wanting to deal constant drama.

Luckily this never happens on this forum. But you know how those Nikon and Canon owners can be. They have issues with the fact that they aren't capable using the Pentax system so they over inflate the status of what they do have. Then they literally buy multiples of multiple models to boost sales figures to level above Pentax so the uninformed think that they must be good because they sell so many. Then they flood their forums with several user names to keep up the lie.

They must be monitoring this forum because as I am typing this a bunch of black SUV's with the words Nikon and Canon printed on them are coming down the street. Luckily I am prepared because I have a big sign on my yard that says Nikon is better then Canon. Small riot breaking out now. I'm going outside to sit on the front porch and watch the entertainment for awhile.

I belong to another forum...have since 2007. However, hardly anyone over there shoots Pentax. LOL

I'm a member of mflenses.com forums, because I've got quite a few of those (including M42 lenses initially bought to see what the fuss was about; now I own camera bodies that need them). It's good reading, but IMO the interaction and cameraderie here are better.

Pentax Forums is rather unique:
  • The members here are unusually helpful
  • Knowledge level is high, both for Pentax brand and for photography in general
  • The level of courtesy is generally pretty high
  • Forum activity is also high
In addition to this site, I belong to rangefinderforum.com, largeformatphotography.info, and apug.org. I have avoided joining the forums at DPReview. Each of the others have their strengths, but PF is definitely in a class of its own.
