Actually, Happy Birthday is still under copyright protection. Public performances have to be approved & paid, which is why restaurants sing a ridiculous made up song for their birthday celebration for patrons.

In the not too distant future, a poor tourist is caught at customs trying to leave the country will illegal photos of Westminster Abby(newly renamed by Citibank), Big Ben (now owned by Google) and the London bridge( renamed for Facebook)!

As of a couple of months ago, this is no longer the case in the USA.

This kind of issue is insidious. Citizens need to confront, cajole and emphasise their points of view to their legislators. It may take time and effort to reverse things, but it can happen. If it doesn't, keep at it!
