That damage could just have easily been caused by fire, and it looks like the lens wasn't attached when it occurred like it would have been if it were being used in the field.
Someone claiming to be the photographer has surfaced after seeing images of his lava-camera on Instagram. He says his tripod fell over while in Hawaii.
