Hi

Sorry guys, a properly trained framer would never mount a picture behind a black passe-partout (mat) like this. (As in your sample) The picture (any picture) would always look like as if it sits behind a black hole. The black is too powerful and the inner edges look like as if they are closing in on the picture, it is sort of strangling it. A black passe-partout always needs contrasting inner edges which will separate it from the picture. (Double mat framing) This affect does not exists with white passe-partouts.

Also, in the classic style the bottom part of the passe-partout ought to be some 20-30% bigger, otherwise it is said the picture will look like as if it wants to slide down the wall. It also facilitates titles and signatures. However this style has lost a bit of appeal these days so there is no hard and fast rule anymore.

Cheers

Thanks.

The only variable option here is either the colour or the width of the inner border. With a black mat colour can't really be much else but white or any shade of grey (forty shades of grey, now how did this get into my head ) as long as the grey is not too dark. The width is a matter of taste but should never be too wide otherwise the picture, the inner border and the black mat start to compete with each other rather than the mat design enhancing the photograph.

The human eye, connected to a trained brain (most, if not all, PF members have one of those ) has a pretty good inbuilt sense of balance. Make use of it.

Cheers

Thinner is much better. The Black draws attention to the black parts of the photos but there isn't much of that. The white draws attention to the white parts and helps separate them from the colored a parts and I like that.

Actually, the black mat inside (1.5mm thick) is a kind of whitish grey, so when it will be cut, this will become apparent, and we will try to leav also a bit of a thinner white margin just outside of the photo to create a framed effect... we will see how it look like in the real world.
