Smartphone photographers driving DSLR sales

I ran across this on another site and thought that it was interesting. It can be summed up pretty well with another saying that I stumbled over...

Give everyone an instrument, and you're bound to find more musicians.
Give everyone some paint, and you're bound to find some artists.
.... so after an initial decline in overall camera sales (other than smartphones), smart phones may be driving some level of resurgence in dSLR adoption.... I guess that time will tell, if this applies worldwide...

The reports of its death have been greatly exaggerated.

Makes sense. First some DSLRs users decided they'd be ok with something more compact (so sales fell on DSLRs), and then as everyone ended up with a decent camera on their phone, some of those people decided they really enjoyed more than casual photography and decided to get some fancier gear (so sales go up again)...

By "dSLR" do you mean specifically only DSLRs or are you also including FF and APS-C MILC systems as well?

The general definition arising from such as eBay sellers, who also frequently refer to long FL lenses as "zoom" lenses (well, you can "zoom" with your feet...)

It makes sense. Phone cameras have gotten to the place where they are "good enough" for a lot of situations and there are plenty of people who basically only use their phone to create images. A certain number of them will become dissatisfied with certain aspects of shooting with such a small sensor -- infinite depth of field, poor high iso performance, lack of dynamic range -- and those are the people who will move on to a camera with a larger sensor.

It is probably better that way. There was a time when phone cameras universally were lousy and everyone got an ILC too -- which they then seldom used because they didn't take it with them. Now, hopefully most of the people purchasing ILCs are interested enough in having a nice camera to actually use it.

The latest phones are getting excellent shots, I'm not sure when(2017 or 8) but Samsung will have a 1/1.7" sensor in their top end phns. This size gets pretty good shots with the Qs( aided by some good lenses ,I know) and the bar will be raised for phones.
