Reykjavik to switch off street lights for Northern Lights

QuoteQuote:
Reykjavik City Council has announced its decision to switch off street lights in selected parts of the Icelandic capital to enable those in the city to enjoy the fantastic Northern Lights display forecast for tonight.

Street lights will be turned off between 10pm and 11pm in various districts of Reykjavik – including the city centre.

Cool - we had several aurora alerts up here in Scotland too, and images were posted from all over the country. Living in the centre of a large city, with significant light pollution and no car, I didn't get to see any, unfortunately.

Pretty cool they're making an effort to turn down the lights during this. I had what amounts to a decent showing for my area a couple nights ago, hoping for clear skies tonight.

If it's clear skies and you're in the northern hemisphere, it may be worth aiming the camera north during this event and firing off a few shots, the camera can pick up some pretty amazing colours even if you can't actually see anything with your eyes.

That's cool. It would be great for all cities to start taking light pollution seriously.

I'm jealous.
