Disposable cameras at the presidential debate

Disclaimer: I do not intend to discuss the debate, the candidates or politics of any nature.

So, was anyone tuned in to the debate tonight? I noticed a funny thing: a lot of guests had Fujifilm disposable 35mm cameras and were walking around snapping shots of the candidates. I could even hear that clicking sound when they wound the film! Pretty cool!

I was at a wedding four weeks ago and they had them there. I thought they would have gone the way of the dodo by now. Still, maybe that is why Fuji can keep manufacturing film.

I was wondering about that, why film cameras if everyone has cell phones?

perhaps because of the novelty/retro aspect of it?

I believe they were being handed out to anyone that wanted one. There was one shot of a woman with two in her hand and it looked like she was asking someone in the crowd if they wanted one...then she handed one to them.

Retro is quite the fad with some of the younger crowd. Vinyl records are all the rage again so I'm not surprised to see film coming back.

Perhaps smartphones were banned, and this was a way for attendees to take home some memories.
It was a nice touch if you ask me.

I think smartphone use may have been restricted. I have seen film cameras around in stores.

I hear they have handed out disposable cameras at the debates since 2008. But I couldn't find an article that explained why.

My assumption is that they don't want people filming videos and/or posting to social media during the debate, so they give them film cameras so they can still take photos if they want.

Here it is mentioned that cell phones are banned, but it seems like it is also speculation:

Unlike the film days, it will cost them 15 bicks a roll to mail it off for development now...

Isn't that what it always cost? And unlike digital they'll have prints to pass around...

I have receipts from the late film days (2003-2008) ranging from 5-9 dollars a roll. Prices for development have climbed higher and higher as the amount of film being shot has dwindled.
