When being a photographer helps make a difference

Dorcas Ministries Raises Over $100,000 in Thanksgiving Fundraiser

A Real Giving of Thanks: This is work I'm proud of because it's helping good people do good work. And yes, I get paid but I bill the "Dorcas Ministries Price". And don't let the the country club setting fool you. This event is about raising money for those that don't have any, good folks on hard times. Moms down to the last can of tuna and an eviction notice. All day, all year, Dorcas employees and volunteers are in a converted supermarket, running a Thrift Store, Food Bank, along with crisis counseling for Housing, Finance, Jobs and now some Health Care.

Used a K3II on one shoulder and one of my K5Iis bodies with 125K+ actuations on the other. DA 12-24, Tamron 28-75/2.8 and DA 50-135. Before the speakers, had a YN560II in each hot shoe and the black foamie thing as a flag on each

Nice work

Well done Brooke,

The photos are excellent and whether you're paid or not, to be involved in something that helps others is an uplifting experience.

It must feels good for the soul.

Thanks. It does feed the soul but you can't pay expenses with photo credit. If I'm to be there for them, I have to cover the expense, just as their staff needs their paychecks. Time spent on their behalf is time I don't have to work for or market to other clients. I don't want to end up needing their help!

Yes very true, you do have to put food on the table.

Thanks, I just wanted to share. Most of the time I'm trying to make Moms & Dads happy but I also shoot for this charity and one other locally. I can't do it for free but I can give them my best discounts and anyone who hires always me gets the best I've got.

For the charities to accomplish their mission, they need to tell their story. Event photos, head shots for newsletters and images for their web presence make a difference to their public perception and results. Publicity matters. Photographers can contribute in meaningful ways. I'm cheer leading a little but I don't see any shortage of need in most communities so if your looking for meaning in your work, the opportunities are there.

I forgot to mention this bit. I'd not heard of the 'black foamie thing' so followed the link and gee, a testimony that sometimes the best ideas are the simplest. Ta for including this bit, always good to learn stuff.

Good work, and thanks for the rabbit trail that took me to an excellent blog with tons of useful info! The Black Foamie Thing was just the beginning; I have bookmarked the site.
