I don't think Pentax people (I assume that's what "ppl" stands for) are particularly defensive. It's only a camera, doesn't really amount to a whole hill of beans which brand you choose unless you earn your living from photography, and perhaps not even then.

Tell Canon shooters about their crap DR and watch. Pentaxians are not particularly defensive. It's just that we are under attack more because of the sheer number of other brandly trolls that like to pick on Pentax.

a) Relative to Canon, Nikon, and Sony users, Iʻd say Pentaxians are actually less defensive.

b) I find if the photographer reacts defensively toward something, itʻs probably because they didnʻt research or know what they were getting and may have second thoughts or regrets. This happens more with people buying a name brand Canikony on sale at their local Walmart, big box store, or Amazon cyber sale.

c) Offensive comments make people defensive; or offensive comments create defensive responses. People have made offensive statements to me, and when I explain to them my reasons or perspective for disagreeing, instead of having a counterpoint, they condescendingly will say, "stop being so defensive" as a way to argue and negate my response. If you donʻt want the ball smashed in your face, donʻt lob it over the net.

i think it's human nature to defend your decision. nobody wants to look foolish.

this applies to everything. look at owners of the big 3 truck brands.

I can only speak for myself here but what really pushes my buttons is a certain brand of what I call "mainstream user ignorance". It's a mix of lack of knowledge mostly found in people who like to think safely inside the box paired with a pinch of arrogance derived from that exact way of thinking. I really don't care if an informed person tells me why they would chose lets say Nikon over Pentax. It's when the blanket statements and prejudices come out that I get snarky.
That is applicable to anything really, any sort of product, blindly following trends etc.

Oddly I find the Pentax community to be far less defensive than other camera brand communities. In general Pentax users understand the limits of their cameras and lenses and are willing to suggest someone use a different brand if that works better for a particular purpose.

I have seen several of these "why are Pentax users so defensive" threads. One well known internet 'guru' made the claim on his blog as well but I just don't see it. Perhaps people who think Pentax users are defensive should go on a Canon or Nikon dedicated forum and make offensive comments about that brand and see what result they get.

The real question is "Why are RAW users so defensive?"

I agree with this statement.

I can only think of one case where someone made offensive comments about the fact that I shoot Pentax and that was my eye doctor! We get along really well and he went through high school at the same time as my wife so they have a longstanding history/friendship but a couple of years ago while having my eyes checked the subject of photography came up (he's a long time Nikon shooter). I mentioned that I don't wear my varifocals when using my camera and he asked what camera I used. When I said Pentax his reply in a loud and derisive tone was 'What the hell do you shoot with THAT for!' Needless to say I was somewhat taken aback as it was very out of character for him and the first time I had been ridiculed for my camera choice. I calmly replied that I had used Pentax cameras since 1979, had a number of legacy lenses that could still be used on my DLSR including the old screw mount lenses, that Pentax offered me more choice in terms of shooting modes (TAV, SV, CIF etc.), better ergonomics, better menus and I liked the IQ Pentax cameras produce. He looked at me for a few seconds and then said 'Well I guess it works for you then!' and changed the subject.

It's probably easy to explain. Pentax user base is probably one of the oldest, and most experienced.
And if you choose to be a Pentaxian you have most likely spent quite some time on investigating on which brand that give you what you need, and will feel more secure in your choice.

So I would say that Pentax users are older, more experienced and have more knowledge on photography in general.
Which tend to make people more open minded.
