41 Hours Chasing a Train

QuoteQuote:
the plan

The plan was simple. Fly to Thunder Bay and chase the train, snapping photos from various cool places.

That's all they (CP) gave me for requests. So really, how perfect is that? I get to do something I love (chase trains - shoot photographs), with the only limiting factor being the train schedule.

It's a bit of a dream really to be given carte blanche to be creative. When I was officially given this assignment, I dove into maps and photos online to start formulating my plan. Thunder Bay was where I decided to fly into, and Nipigon, with its very cool train bridge, was the target for that evening. So, to get to Thunder Bay in time to get to Nipigon in time, I had to be on a 6 a.m. flight from Calgary. 41 hours later, I was tucking into bed in Winnipeg at the hotel after shooting the final performance (for me) a little earlier.

What a cool thing... but, I seriously doubt I'd have the stamina for that kind of thing these days.

Way cool! Would love to see some of those shots. And ditto for me what normhead said.

Duh! Okay I just noticed the link. Great shots.

Our local camera club put out notices of it being in nearby towns--Hamilton, Woodstock, London.

Amazing shots! Thanks for sharing the link. The train passed by about 5 miles south of my house at 11:30 at night. Unfortunately it was cruising at full steam, and my shots were completely worthless. And I was worthless the next day after staying up to catch it.

Neil, that is completely awesome! Great shots, fantastic work in what I'm sure must've been some difficult conditions. This one is my favorite, great light streaks: 41 Hours Chasing a Train by Neil Zeller - Exposure

-if the link above doesn't go direct to the photo, it's the one in Winnipeg (I think?) with light streaks through the right side of the frame.

Great shots, my two grand-daughters (age 6 and 4) saw it when it came to London, Ontario a few days ago.

That train is amazing, and you captured it beautifully! Although I love all the shots, I particularly liked the one of it coming out of a tunnel, and the icicles were shown!

Thanks for sharing these great shots!

Seats on the train are reserved for CP employees and VIP's only. Although this year they are doing a photo contest with the prize being a chance to ride the train next year.
