This is a great thread! There are some names I haven't heard of, so I will hopefully (probably) be making great discoveries. My favorite photographers and artists in general are those who convey a sense of intimacy.

Writer/photographer Denis Roche comes to mind - I discovered him at an exhibition in Montpellier just after his death in 2015:
Denis Roche, Photolalies, 1964-2010

Another frenchman, born in Vietnam, neverending globetrotter: Bernard Plossu (and his fabulous printers the Fresson family):
The Eye of the Photographer: Travels in Color - Interview with Bernard Plossu | LensCulture

I also welcome the softness in this portfolio by Philippe Pache, from switzerland:

Oh, and there's great stuff by Linda McCartney, too:
Linda McCartney

And so many other favorites... Thanks for sharing yours!

I enjoyed those too - mostly not my style, but all exposure to different ideas is good, and who knows what might result

That's what I did. Not all had a big presence on the net but did get an idea of what was going on in contemporary photography.
Anyway...

1. This one was easy for me. Fan Ho
He knows the power and language of the image. Power with subtitly, art with the eye of a journalist.
All that and mercifully he doesn't allow his ego to get between the image and the viewer.

2. Holly Andres
From the, apparently, mundane to the sublime, from kitsch to art? But you need to see her full collection to know where she is going with it.
Hard to articulate but she got to me. Perhaps it's that Midwestern middle America ambiance that I know so well - my own roots. Perhaps its the women's viewpoint.
Even her technique is sort of point and shot to the level of an art form. At the end of the day she spoke to me with her images and that's all that really matters.

As of yesterday morning this was all those mentioned and I checked them out as best as I could on the net:

Yes, Wildman, he passed away last year. Definitely a Magnum standard photographer but he didn't move in those circles.

Glad you liked her ... then you also might check out Jeff Wall.

Yeah, he's great, a Magnum stalwart.

The lawsuit over 'The Kiss' was remarkable.

One thing that occurs to me -not for the first time -while looking at the work of the photographers represented here is that there are a lot of obviously great pictures, but there are others that you enjoy because you trust the intelligence of the photographer - they have a strong enough track record of producing amazing work that you look twice at pictures that they deem worthy of publishing even if they don't immediately grab you. Sometimes that works against us when people don't sufficiently see what thought goes into OUR pictures because we've not established a name.

I'm interested as always by the 'big names' that haven't come up as favourites - Cartier-Bresson, Man Ray, Robert Capa, Cecil Beaton, David Bailey, Terence Donovan, Tina Modotti, Eve Arnold, Frans Lanting, Jim Brandenburg, Irving Penn - to mention just a few off the top of my head - but it's great that there are many contemporary photographers in the list - that's as it should be

If I'm ever a half as good as they are I would be a genius...

Have you ever seen the trippy film 'Blowup', Jon?

David Bailey was one of the inspirations for the main character.

Given how much I loved that film as a kid, now I can't believe how ridiculous it is. I take it as clear evidence, your brain isn't fully functional until you are 26.
