CMOS Market shares

Image Sensors World: Market Shares, View from China

When looking at digital camera's there is not a whole lot of choice. Sony is the largest. Canon doesn't sell it's sensors to competitors. Toshiba has been bought by Sony. Samsung has ceased development of large sensors. On Semi is used in Leica I believe but it is not very well reviewed. Ricoh seems to be stuck with Sony unless there is some promising start up in the "other" category. Maybe Ricoh should start making sensors

Interesting!

What's missing from this chart is smartphone sensors. Apple alone spends $4 billion a year on camera modules -- almost double the total "digital cameras market revenue" shown in this graph. I'd not be surprised if Android device makers are at least another $10-15 billion in CMOS sensor sales. It's smartphone cameras are are driving sensor development and paying for all the R&D and new manufacturing capacity in this space.

Without the camera driving the upgrade cycle there's no reason to upgrade.

It's the continuing improvement in sensor quality (specifically, better ISO range) that prompted me to go with a new K-S2 last year, rather than a used K-5 or K-3. I've not regretted that choice much - although I do prefer the sensor output on my K-01 - it's just warmer and richer in some way - even though the ISO range isn't quite as wide.

I'm currently saving for either a K-1 or whatever the successor to the K-3ii is going to be, and banking on the fact that the sensor will be another quantum leap forward. So, in a perverse way, I'm glad for all those smartphone camera sensors being produced. If all those R&D dollars mean better sensors for me, I'm all for it.

Just click the link on top. There is a chart for phones as well. I just singled out the camera's.
