A (non) photo hiking tour/workshop of Iceland.

Not something that I was considering doing, but I found this article interesting - non the less.... each participant paid 3400 euros for a week - of non photography....

A few days ago I left Sweden to go to Iceland for a photo tour with Max Rive. I was really looking forward to it since I´ve been following him for a while on Instagram and been amazed by his photos. But what was suppose to be the highlight of the summer became a nightmare that lead to everyone of the participants on the workshop dropped out (except for one).

So if you are ever thinking about going on a photography tour or workshop with Max Rive you should read this (and do yourself a favour and book with someone else).

That's like.. 3x the average monthly wage here.

As always there are two sides to the story. His response to her article is also worth the read.

Would be interesting to see how it was advertised.

Looks to be a trip more for hardcore hikers than photographers.

I agree. It looks like this transpired from a combination of factors, with fault possibly on both sides.

But 3,400 euros... that's an expensive photography tour

Here's a link to his website description for the Greenland tour... 3,950 euros:

Yeah, it's a pity the original description for the Iceland tour is not there.

The Greenland one has warnings about the physicality, though.

I understand that if you put in a lot of defensive riders into an ad, you scare customers off, but on the other hand, he admits having to do refunds to two of the Iceland participants.

Actually, the up-coming Iceland tour is here: Max Rive Photography

Looks like it has been updated from previously, though... It certainly makes a point of the high physical fitness required, and seems to include more processing and tuition than the reviewed tour...

It looks great, to be honest!

If the operators learned stuff from the past tour, well-heeled participants could have a fantastic time.

Iceland is an expensive place to travel. Camping fees are relatively cheap, but car rental is costly, food is costly. Renting a high-clearance 4WD, such as you need to get to most of the interior, is very costly. €500 per day for a tour led by an expert photographer doesn't sound out of line. Assuming the tour is run well...
