If you see what looks possibility stolen is there anything you can do?

Occasionally on Craigslist i see what must be a scam or stolen. Today a 5d mark 3 intentionally misspelled in the title with 24-70l 2.8 for $1000.
I would like to give a heads up to someone.

Get the serial number and contact Lenstag?

Lenstag - Free theft protection and monitoring for cameras, lenses and video equipment

They list missing/stolen gear and you can (anonymously) tip them off if it appears on Craiglist etc.

They have a generic picture and a phone number for a out of state realtor. I am not going to contact the seller.

If you're certain it's stolen, about all you can do is report it to Craigslist. Without serial numbers to confirm the theft, or a physical location, there's little we can do. When we have numbers, or an actual photo that a victim can identify the objects, we can arrange controlled buys, but they are near impossible to do by mail.

Most likely a scam. There is no camera, though I am sure the person who placed the ad would be very pleased to accept your check.

Frustrating, if this was a bike theft here in New Orleans there would be consequences.

I once called the police because someone had $20,000 of new computer equipment listed for sale in a local website for $800. The police told me if I thought it was such a bargain, I should buy it. I guess they were busy.

We had a woman here in Vancouver who found her stolen bike on CL and setup a meeting with the seller/thief (posing as a potential buyer) to take a look.

She confronted the guy when they meet and managed to get her bike back with no issues. Local police commenting on the case, did not recommend that approach in theft cases!.

Usually on those ads there is no camera and the seller will tell you to western union the money instead of PayPal or a credit card so you have no protection. They list a lot of stuff so cheap people can't resist the deal and just lose their money.
