Photography at 38,000 feet

Now THAT'S a good view from the office: Pilot's jaw-dropping cockpit images of thunderstorms, moon-lit clouds and the Northern Lights show why life at 38,000ft is unbeatable

Makes me want to get a pilot's license... and I realize it's too late to fly anything large enough to reach 38,000 feet. I do fly rockets and I could fly them that high if I worked at it but the cameras would be automated not in my hands. Hummmm...

Nice work. To be honest that display of sparks on the airplaine would be a little worrisome for me.

And of course flat earthers are complaining that lens distortion is faking the curvature of the earth - even though many current rectilinear UWA lenses have distortion levels of 4% and below. To optically create a curvature of that degree would require over 10% distortion.

St Elmo's fire!
Helicopters build up a lot of static on the rotor blades at night. With night vision goggles on it is very sparky if relative humidity is low. Very cool to see, and when it is also dusty, like in the desert, even more impressive.

Lovely pictures. Modern camera technology has made this style of photography far more convenient and in some cases, possible. Trying to mount an old film camera in order to grab these shots would be a frustrating exercise, and one would have no idea how the framing and focus looked until the film was developed.

Isn't that the blue/purplish glow that can show up on ships rigging during storms?

Unless, you know... actually compose the image by looking through the viewfinder.
