Invisible Images (Your Pictures Are Looking at You) – The New Inquiry

QuoteQuote:
This invisible visual culture isn’t just confined to industrial operations, law enforcement, and “smart” cities, but extends far into what we’d otherwise–and somewhat naively–think of as human-to-human visual culture. I’m referring here to the trillions of images that humans share on digital platforms–ones that at first glance seem to be made by humans for other humans.

A shared image is well...a shared image. As such it should be assumed that it will be exploited to the full extent of the terms and conditions as well as the deep reach of civil authorities. Stripping location data from the EXIF helps a little as does artful limitations on captions and non-participation in features such as Flickr's map location widget. Also useful is framing recognizable features in unusual says and/or seeding one's works with elements of disinformation inserted in PP. Are getting strange enough yet in the descent into this rabbit warren?

30 years ago I wrote digital image processing demonstration software for inspection of e.g. beer bottles.

Never imagined that stuff like that would evolve to what is described in the article and what we use now.
