"You can find pictures anywhere. You just have to care about what's around you and have a concern with humanity." Elliot Erwitt quoted in "The Art Of The Photograph" by Art Wolfe and Rob Sheppard.

Was listening to Bookends earlier this evening and this really struck a chord,

“Long ago...it must be....
I have a photograph.
Preserve your memories;
They’re all that’s left you”

I can't paint either, and I like preserving memories as much as the next guy. So with those reasons out, I'll try two that haven't been said yet.

To feel a connection to my father and grandfather, who were/ are both avid photographers.

So I can look at the pictures and remind myself that beauty exists all around me, even in the mundane, even where it "shouldn't".

I like this explanation. It's very close to what I was about to post, which is, "Showing the ordinary in an extraordinary way."

"I take photographs to see what they'll look like". Can't remember who said that, though.

I have always been fascinated by these tiny machines that can capture images, have had a camera in my hands since I was a wee one...

I always liked painters that are able to show light falling on a subject in a beautiful way, and now I learned how to see that light around me. I think that's the biggest benefit that photography has brought me, to help me appreciate more the beauty that is all around us and goes unnoticed most of the time.

I've always loved finding things but hated disturbing things. Photography lets me record what I find without disturbing anything.

It all started with a kodak 120 with auto exposure and a now famous snap of a hippo surfacing and yawning at the Honolulu zoo in 1980(stolen)

I really like the world of digital photography as it plays well with my electronics career and diy hobbies and allowed me to break into the once totally out of reach world of astrophotography.

Sometimes I just "see" a photograph and have to take it. Freezing a moment has so much more meaning to me than the now popular videos.

Photography. Writing with light. More appropriately, painting with light. I love capturing moments. I love getting that little slice of time for as long as the medium will hold up. I also love looking at old photos and wondering what sorts of lives were lived by the people in them (unless I know who the people were). It's a form of time travel, as well as art.
