You are right, it will get political to go into it any deeper.
...and this thread will be closed quite promptly by the mods as a result. The rant reads like a complaint about the cost of goods in the EU with cameras as an example.

just a thought

if ' discussion ' was substituted for ' rant ' in the thread's caption -

cost discussion

perhaps a person seeing the caption might have a different initial impression?

If you live in Norway everything is about twice (at least) as expensive as anywhere else

We have a 13% sales tax that is added onto the listed price... Prices are often lower in the US though, lots of people go shopping in the US. Lots of people have been ranting about book prices, for example. Books sold here typically have US and Canadian price listed, and the US price is lower in excess of the exchange rate...

prices in the US for the same items can vary depending on region of the country

sales taxes vary from state to state and certain items might be exempt depending on the state as well

don't know if that would be true for photographic equipment and there are on line options there

most obviously are prices in Alaska ( personal experience ) and Hawaii ( rumor)

I would expect the same would be true for the other islands controlled by the US

Florida Keys ???

I can see where that can be very frustrating!!!
I live in the US (Oregon) one of the few states that dose not have a sales tax (i love it) we can buy products for less than other states that have a sales tax. But I live in a smaller community so we pay MORE than people living in larger community's. People living in Nevada don't pay a state income tax and people living in NY pay a hough state income tax.

So my point is that the price varies depending on your location. This SUPPOSEDLY reflects what your getting back from where you live.
High tax = more government return.
Low tax = less government return
I know this is not always the case and I DEFINITELY am not saying what is right or wrong!!!!!
Best wishes!!

We make up for it in the cost of our healthcare

As noted above, taxes and cost of doing business account for the differences in price. Actual sales volume might also be a factor.

Steve
I do understand your point. But we pay high tax from our salaries to benefit from good health care and infrastructure.

I dont see why I have to pay a high tax for my camera. It has nothing to do with the state

The state of Virginia does have a 5.3 percent sales tax and some counties tack on an additional 0.7 percent to bring it up to an even 6 percent. That's significantly less than the VAT that is charged in most EU members, but it is probably better to compare pre-tax prices for goods on both sides of the Atlantic. As to whether or not different taxes are worth it, I would hesitate to comment. Each country decides what services they will offer their citizens and then the bill has to be paid by a variety of taxes. If you cut down VAT then you probably have to add some other tax elsewhere.
