where I grew up in rural Illinois the roads were " crowned " ( raised slightly in the middle ) so they drained to the sides
you drove in the middle until you saw oncoming traffic or were approaching the crown of a hill or an intersection
one other problem
at the right time of year, lasting for 3 months or so, corn 6 feet or higher being grown in the fields from ditch to ditch, you could not see down the intersecting road until you started to enter the intersection
it got interesting at times
