One way of testing for barrel distortion

When same subject is placed at the edge of the frame, it looks wider.

I noticed this while detecting Nodal distance for Pentax FA 35mm F2 and Pentax FA 50mm F1.4. I am thinking this is one of the way of testing for barrel distortion. Note my intention was not to test for barrel distortion.

Steps are as follows.
Take 3 pictures of same subject. In the 1st picture keep the subject in the middle of the frame. Then pan the camera to left so subject comes to right edge and take the 2nd picture. Then pan the camera to right and take the 3rd picture. Now compare the width of the subject in all these pictures. Subject will most probably wider when it goes to edge of the frame.

Pentax FA 50mm F1.4
