Pentax Photo Gallery (PPG) not responding

Following some recent posts on the PPG I have began using it again regularly and voting on a daily basis. Many times I got to the point where I had no more images available to vote on. Three images I submitted a month are are in pending status.

Yesterday and today I have been unable to connect to the website at all. www.pentaxphotogallery.com

Is anyone else able to connect?

It's been down all weekend. Discussed yesterday in another forum...

Pentax Photo Gallery (PPG) entries - Page 405 - PentaxForums.com

I'm not surprised. I had images in the queue for six months.

I missed the latest on that thread, just seeing the earliest entries.

Hoping they get it going again and folks start using it to its potential.

The domain name is paid up through sometime next year and the DNS resolves to an active IP address, but the address is essentially refusing connections. Usually that means that either the site has been pulled or someone has not paid their bills or the server has crashed and nobody cares.

It’s a shame that it is going by the wayside, there were many beautiful pictures there and I was proud to be a part of it. Every once in a while I felt unworthy and thought of the Groucho Marx joke, “I wouldn’t want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member.”
(I may not have the quote exactly right but you get the idea.)

Before the brand owners lost interest, and even for some time after, I used to care a lot about that site, both as an inspiration and a motivation to get work out there and put it to the test.

Today, I can't look at it without thinking of the stuffed dodo in its display case at the Natural History Museum. And that includes my own images too, uploaded and displayed at by now pathetic resolutions, and processed with my skill level and the software I was using back then.

Seriously, how is that site in its current state supposed to whet anybody's appetite for buying into the Pentax system in 2018? (Disclaimer: This post is not intended to put down the accomplished photography of anybody, of which there is still plenty, and which the site has come to do such a poor job of showcasing.)

To be honest, one of the reasons I quite being active there was because I got tired of denying hundreds of people's vacation and pet snapshots.

I'm rather proud of the images I have up on the Pentax Photo Gallery, and had my specific web address there on my business cards (as below). I have noticed that I have had images up for approval for a very long time with no posting. I recall something similar happened not long ago because somebody at Pentax did not renew something or other, and then it got back up again. Is there any chance the moderators here can contact Pentax and find out what is going on?

Given that many users will have day-to-day jobs they need to attend to, and people also tend to shoot things they love and care for, those kinds of subjects are only to be expected, I guess. I'm certainly guilty of shooting and uploading a lot of those, although I do try to take them beyond mere snapshots.

However, the sheer number and, let's face it, often mediocre quality thrown at you in these voting situations can be pretty exhausting. I also recall that, towards the end of my regular visits to the gallery, I couldn't shake the feeling that the overall quality of images submitted for voting was deteriorating. But maybe that's just me, or me becoming pickier over time.

When I'm making this kind of comment, I really don't want to badmouth something I regarded, in its heyday, as something quite worthwhile and a true Pentax differentiator. Nothing wrong at all with giving some prominence to and thus showing appreciation of the actual photography users are producing with Pentax gear. Helps with fostering brand loyalty and, if done properly, can even generate sales, I think. Frankly, I'm quite susceptible to that kind of marketing, which played a significant role in winning me over to the Pentax system in the first place. By letting PPG slowly die, without coming up with a worthy replacement, Ricoh Imaging is missing out on a serious opportunity IMO.

Well, good news! Yesterday I contacted Adam, and he said he would e-mail Pentax to see what gives. Lo and behold, the PPG site is back online again today! However, they still have not acted on pending submissions for months - very frustrating. It would be nice if Pentax paid better attention.

The main site seems to be working, very slow but working. Several minutes to open the "recently added" category which is not good. However I am unable to vote. No images are presented just a broken file icon. This has been happening since the weekend. I have sent two feedback reports. My last submission failed to display even though it reported as listed in my pending photos. Besides the fact that images wait around for months waiting approval, this site is quickly approaching the outer limits of my patience.

I just spent the last hour voting on images. 2018-06-26 4:22 PDT.
Actually it was a little faster than last week. I have not uploaded anything to PPG for the last few years. Simply because I don't take images of cats, dogs, bugs or one female over and over and over. Or airplanes.

I've been waiting seven months for a batch to get approved...

Interestingly, i can see the exif data, I can't see an enlarged image, the button works, a new window opens but no image. I CAN vote. Question is should I? I tried on a couple and it seemed to respond and a new black window was presented. What I was voting on? Apologies if I rejected a great image or passed a bad one.

I also tried three other browsers as well as Firefox, Chrome and Windows Edge and Firefox on my Iphone. All with the same result.
